Welcome to the Autumn edition of the EGS e-newsletter, published bi-annually to keep you updated with news of former pupils, parents and staff and of events and reunions that are being held throughout the year.
A word from Paul Haworth, President of The Edge Grove Society

Dear Edge Grove Alumni

Today's Edge Grove is thriving and has the largest pupil numbers ever. This I am sure is largely due to the considerable charisma, enthusiasm and very hard work of the Headmaster Ben Evans and his wife Alex. It is therefore with great sadness that I inform you that they will be leaving Edge Grove in July to progress their careers at Windlesham Hall. Having had the privilege of appointing Ben eight years ago whilst I was Chair of Governors, it is a source of enormous pride for me that their time at Edge Grove has proved so successful. It is too early to say goodbye but I believe it is never too early to say thank you, so may I be the first to say a very big thank you Ben and Alex for your amazing contribution to life at Edge Grove.

There are many exciting events coming up this year, possibly the most spectacular will be the opening of the new Lower School building, the largest investment which has ever been made in the school’s infrastructure, or maybe it will be the celebrations to mark the 20th anniversary of the admission of the first year of girls. Either way, there are some great events ahead which you are warmly invited to support.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my two year term of office as President of the Edge Grove Society and I am delighted to advise you that Alex Henchley (Edge Grove alumnus 1971-1977) has accepted our invitation to succeed me in this privileged role. I wish him every success and hope he will enjoy the same satisfaction which I have by holding this position. We have included a short bio on Alex below.

I would like to add my sincere thanks to Sue Maughan and Stephanie Hanna for thier tremendous dedication, efficiency and enthusiasm for the Society, without which the Society would certainly not have become the success it has.

I look forward to continuing to support the school and the Alumni events in every way I can, and to seeing you all again soon.

With very best wishes

Paul Haworth

Alex Henchley to become new EGS President

We are delighted to announce that Alex Henchley will be taking over from Paul Haworth as the next EGS President.  We thank Paul for all his support and hard work over the years but we look forward to some exciting years ahead with Alex at the helm.  Here is a short introduction to our incoming EGS President...

"I attended Edge Grove from Winter 1971 to Summer 1977 starting in Churchills and ending as House Captain of Hedgerows. In my last year, I captained the 1st XI football and cricket teams as well as playing in the 1st XV Rugby. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the school making some lifelong friends in the process.

I went onto Aldenham School with a number of my year from Edge Grove where I played 1st XI football and cricket along with captaining the squash team. I was heavily involved with the Old Aldenhamian Football Club for twenty-five years.

After school, I worked in the Public Relations industry for 30 years providing press release and media monitoring services.

I am married with twins and have recently moved to Radlett. For those in my era, they might remember I am also a very big Arsenal fan! I am also a member of the MCC and Hadley Wood Club.

The photo above is from the recent EGS Golf Day held in May 2019 at which I somehow managed to win the 'nearest the pin' competition!  I am looking forward to getting even more involved in the wonderful range of EGS events and to meeting some more of you along the way."

Staff v Alumni Cricket Match
June 2019
What a great day for the Alumni v staff and dads cricket match. With an abundance of alumni of all ages wanting to play, Captain Mark Turpin did a fine job in giving everyone a go. In the end the staff team won with Mr Eglinton sustaining a ball to the nose courtesy of Ben Clayden! Players and spectators were treated to a delicious match tea midway and post-match beers and bbq.
Speech Day 2019
Speech Day is always the highlight of the year and the opportunity for us all to reflect on another successful year and celebrate so much progress and endeavour.  This year's Speech Day was no exception and we were thrilled to welcome back alumnus Dr Dominic Selwood as our guest speaker.  He spoke about 'Project You' and how time at Edge Grove should be used by pupils to discover who they really are and who they want to be. It was a fascinating and very thought-provoking speech.

From the address given by Dr Dominic Selwood to the speeches from the Head Boy and Head Girl, it was the perfect way to round off another successful year.  As well as the giving of well-earned and well-deserved individual prizes, we reflected on the vast achievements we accomplished as a whole school and discussed aspiration, ambition, innovation and progression, all of which can be found in abundance at Edge Grove.
Bonfire Night November 2019
We had a fantastic Bonfire Night with an impressive bonfire and fireworks display. It was lovely to see some of you here including some recent leavers who always bring energy and enthusiasm to any school event.

Message from Matt Unwin OB (84-89)
Dear Class of 1989
This year marks 30 years since we left Edge Grove (yes, really). If, like me, you have lost touch with many of our fellow 1989 Alumni then you may also feel that it is high time we marked the occasion with a reunion.
On Saturday 7th December the school is hosting an Alumni Christmas Lunch for pupils who attended the school between 1985 and 2000. If ever you needed an excuse to get out of Christmas shopping or another kid’s concert then surely this is it. Wives and partners are also welcome to join.
I will be attending and it would be great to catch up with as many of you as possible.
If you are happy for your email address to be added to a list of attendees please contact myself or Sue Maughan, the Alumni manager at Edge Grove smaughan@edgegrove.com who is organising the lunch. If you are in contact with anyone else from our year feel free to pass this letter on.
Timothy Wachs, is also on board. Let’s hope we can get a full house.
With best wishes

Matt Unwin
(Hedgerows 84-89)

The Alumni & Development Office supports a global network of Edge Grove alumni. We love to stay in touch with our alumni, updating them on school and alumni news, connecting old friends and reuniting them through events and reunions.

Fundraising is another aspect of our work. Donations are a vital asset to the school, helping fund new projects and providing bursaries to give children the best start in life. The Alumni & Development Office is not funded by donations, meaning that every gift goes to the project for which it is intended.

If you would like any further information on the Alumni & Development Office and the work we do please do not hesitate to contact us.
